Doosan rode a steady batting lineup to a 9-2 victory over Kiwoom in their regular-season home game at Jamsil Stadium on Monday. Starter Choi Won-jun did his part with six hits and two runs over five innings, including one home run, while the bats pounded out 14 hits, including homers by Yang Suk-hwan and Park Jun-young.
Doosan opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with a Jose Rojas RBI single, but Yang Seok-hwan’s solo home run in the bottom of the inning gave them some breathing room. In the bottom of the fourth, with runners on first and second, Park Jun-young hit a line drive to left-center field that left fielder Park Chan-hyuk missed, turning a bases-loaded double into a triple. As Park stooped to make the catch, the ball appeared to overlap the light tower, blocking his view.
After the lucky triple, Doosan scored one more run when Kim Hye-sung, the second baseman who fielded Jung Soo-bin’s hit, backhanded it. After reaching on an error, Jeong stole second base and scored on Rojas’ single to left-center to make it 6-0. The game was effectively won.
Doosan starter Choi Won-jun gave up two runs in the top of the fifth, a solo home run to Song Sung-moon and a single to right field to Kim Woong-bin with runners on first and second, but he was able to get out of the inning and earn the win.
With a four-run lead in hand, Doosan added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Park Jun-young hit his first home run in three games after being acquired. Doosan tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to complete its eighth straight win at the whistle.
During the “dynasty” era, Doosan won 10 straight games from before Gocheok Nexen (now Kiwoom) on June 6, 2018, to Hanwha in Daejeon on June 16. Since then, they have won eight straight games in 1849 days. The last time Doosan won eight games in a row was on June 14, 2018, against KT in Jamsil, and it had been 1851 days since they had enjoyed such a long winning streak.
Doosan head coach Lee Seung-yeop analyzed the game, saying that “defense stability led to two-hit harmony.” “During our winning streaks in Ulsan and Pohang, we had a lot of runs and no errors. As the defense stabilized, both the offense and defense became more stable.”
Doosan ‘Captain’ Heo Kyung-min, who has won eight games in a row for the first time in five years, said, “The head coach tried to make the players feel as comfortable as possible, but we didn’t follow through. We felt very sorry, but I think it’s good that we recovered our performance.” “I don’t think the winning streak means much. “I don’t think it’s important to get carried away with the streak, it’s more important to stay focused until the end because the gap (to the top four teams) is small. We will try to play our best every game and win a lot.”
