Jamsil Baseball Stadium will be transformed into a multicultural space.
A major league-level state-of-the-art dome ballpark will be built in conjunction with a luxury hotel.
The city of Seoul announced on the 18th that it will build a ‘Sports and MICE Complex’, a waterfront eco-cultural space connected to the Han River, including a dome ballpark in Jamsil, Songpa-gu, by the end of 2031.안전놀이터
Like the Rogers Centre in Toronto, home of Ryu Hyun-jin, it is planned to be connected to a hotel and allow guests to watch games from their rooms.
Seoul City is planning to build a dome ballpark to be completed by the end of 2031, starting with the dismantling of existing facilities such as Jimseol Baseball Stadium in 2026 and completing it by the end of 2031, with Seoul Smart MICE Park (provisional name), the preferred bidder for the Jamsil Stadium-MICE complex project.
It is the largest closed dome stadium in Korea with more than 30,000 seats that can host international competitions. It is also capable of hosting large-scale performances and events during the All-Star Break and offseason. The hotel in the dome stadium will have 300 rooms, including 120 premium rooms with a ballpark view. The construction cost is expected to be around 500 billion won.
There will be a 360-degree open concourse (corridor space connected to spectator seats) that circulates through the infield and outfield, as well as various premium seats such as skyboxes, field boxes, and family zones.
The Jamsil Dome stadium is a welcome development, given the recent abnormal weather conditions that have made it difficult for the season to proceed normally.
However, the problem is the measures during construction.
The LG Twins and Doosan Bears, who call Jamsil Baseball Stadium home, have nowhere to go.
The Gocheok Sky Dome and Mokdong Baseball Stadium are being considered as temporary alternatives, but it’s not a simple matter. The Gocheok Dome is home to the Kiwoom Heroes.
Organizing traffic is not easy.
The problem of using Mokdong Baseball Field, which has been playing high school and college baseball since Dongdaemun Baseball Stadium disappeared, is also not simple. Even night games are restricted due to constant noise and light pollution complaints from nearby apartment complexes.
LG and Doosan Baseball are longtime customers of Jamsil Baseball Stadium.
The issue of home stadiums for these two professional baseball teams is not just a corporate issue. It’s about the millions of baseball fans who support these two popular teams. For six years, they’ve been traveling from one temporary stadium to another.
A state-of-the-art dome in Jamsil is a welcome addition. However, such a large-scale project requires careful consideration, including finding alternatives that are based on today’s realities.
It’s not just a matter of convenience for LG and Doosan.
It’s a matter of careful administrative planning that takes into account the growing number of baseball fans.
We need to look back to see if this was a rushed decision with no alternatives that was overshadowed by the spectacle of the exhibition. We need to take the time to come up with realistic measures to fill the six-year gap. This should be done in close consultation with our clients, the LG Twins, Doosan Bears, and the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO).
